LEADERS ARE READERS
Who you are five years from now is based on what you feed your mind today
--the books you read, the movies you watch, the podcasts you listen to, etc. If I promised you just an hour with the most successful person that you know of, would you do it? Of course you would! Well, that is exactly what books are -- a window into the minds of some of the most brilliant, original, dedicated, creative people on the planet. By reading (or listening), you have the opportunity to glean from people that you might never meet in your lifetime.
Here are a few of the most impactful books that I've read over the last year that might help you get started!
"But, I don't have time to read."
Neither do I. As a homeschooling, working mom I have to squeeze in every spare minute I can get. That's why you'll almost always see me with a book in my purse...in case a spare minute comes up! Get up an hour earlier. Set aside 10 minutes somewhere. Put your book in the bathroom. Seriously! Make the time. You won't just "find" it.
"But, I'm not good at reading. It's hard for me."
Reading can be hard. In my house, we have two readers and two that struggle greatly with reading, so I understand the very real struggle. I really do. The good news is, you don't have to read to have input! You can listen! Listen to podcasts. Listen to audio books. Listen, listen, listen. The form doesn't matter. The content does. You can make time and space to listen.

He reveals his insights on the major differences between those who survived the horrific ordeal and those who did not. Rich with life lessons for today.
WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR BY PAUL KALANITHI
Memoir of Life & Death
Every person on the planet should read this book. Mr. Kalanthi was a brilliant & promising neurologist who gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. He writes this book about his process of living & dying, first from the doctor's point of view and then as a patient. A thought provoking must read.
START WITH WHY BY SIMON SINEK
Leadership & Inspiring Others
This book was much more in depth than I anticipated! I thought it would be about finding your simple "why", but he develops the concept into a 3D model that affects every decision you make. Reading this book got me on the right track to solidifying my WHY and choosing actions that are in perfect alignment with my motivation using the Celery Test!
THE WAR OF ART BY STEVEN PRESSFIELD
Kicking Resistance & Awakening Creativity
After hearing this odd little book recommended by a whole host of top performers, I decided to check it out. It ended up being my favorite read of 2016. The short chapters, the language, the boldness, the personification of "resistance" -- it all combines to create something uniquely brilliant, powerful, and memorable. This is a book I keep going back to. A must read!
UNINVITED BY LYSA TERKEURST
Overcoming Rejection & Living Loved
Listening to Lysa Terkeurst talk about it on the Start Up Camp Podcast piqued my interest in this book. I didn't perceive that I struggled with rejection, but as a leader, I thought I should at least understand it. Wow, what a surprise! I learned so much about myself through reading this book. The revelation in my own life was deep and it took me to new places of understanding myself & my struggles. This is a must read for anyone who wrestles with rejection, or thinks they don't ( like I did!) :) It's time to get free and live loved
TOOLS OF TITANS BY TIM FERRISS
Practical Tips & Leader Thinking
When this book arrived with all it's 700+ pages, I was a little (a lot) intimidated. I thought it would take forever to finish. But, surprisingly, I had the best time reading this book! Each interview is only a few pages long, so I found the book really fun to read. I skipped all around the book following the related topics Ferriss provides. He asks the top performers excellent and revealing questions If you're interested in living your best life in health, wealth and wisdom, you should read this one! PS: About halfway through the book, he teaches us a trick about creating your own "index" of interesting topics on a blank page in the front or the back of the book. I wish I had known that great tip before, because there are many topics/quotes from the first half of the book I want to re-visit, but I can't remember who said them!
TALK LIKE TED BY CARMINE GALLO
Tips & Strategies for Public Speaking
One of the best things I got out of this book was a long list of amazing TED Talks to watch. Gallo does a good job of breaking down the specifics of what makes a great delivery and matches perfect TED talks that show examples of the concept. This was a bit of a dry read for me, but taking a break and coming back to it helped me finish. I definitely feel more equipped with creative speaking strategies and look forward to incorporating them to create memorable and life-changing presentations!

ATLAS SHRUGGED BY AYN RAND
Fictional Entrepreneurial Mystery & Dense Philosophy
I've heard this book recommended again and again by industry experts & top performers, so I decided to inspect it for myself. This fictional novel is set in the near future and details what would happen if entrepreneurial endeavors became obsolete. In my opinion, the book doesn't get REALLY interesting until about 300 pages in. After that, I couldn't put it down. Well written, interesting book, but I don't completely agree with the philosophy manifesto. I recommend taking it with a grain of salt. I actually miss reading this book & I'm sad that it ended!

Jim Collins and his team gathered years of research and data to narrow down the elements of what enables companies to ascend to "greatness." He also shares powerful anti-examples of the companies that could have been great, but failed & details out the factors that resulted in their falling short. Another solid favorite.
